During that time, I offered two after school and weekend\u00a0workshops that introduced new\u00a0materials\/techniques (printmaking, acrylic painting, wax resist) as well as a historical\/thematic approach to 1960&#8217;s art and contemporary urban design.\u00a0Please check out some amazing examples of student work below and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.creativeartworks.org\/#who-we-are-home\" target=\"_blank\">find out\u00a0more information<\/a> about this incredible organization on the CAW website.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<div class='divider-border' style='margin-top: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px'><\/div><div class='clear'><\/div>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>MONSTER MOSAICS<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Nothing gets the creative juices flowing like\u00a0asking children to create their very own monster masterpieces!\u00a0After looking at various &#8220;creature&#8221;\u00a0illustrations from the 1960s, students\u00a0decided\u00a0what sort of\u00a0monsters they&#8217;d like to create (coming up with elaborate sketches\/backstories), then expressed\u00a0their creative voice using bright colors and abstract shapes.\u00a0This playful\u00a0project\u00a0helps\u00a0students learn how to look at\/talk about works of art while\u00a0emphasizing the importance of both\u00a0individuality\u00a0and collaboration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.deborahznewman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/caw-monstermosaics2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-3323 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.deborahznewman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/caw-monstermosaics2.jpg\" alt=\"caw-monstermosaics2\" width=\"765\" height=\"684\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.deborahznewman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/caw-monstermosaics2.jpg 765w, http:\/\/www.deborahznewman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/caw-monstermosaics2-300x268.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 765px) 100vw, 765px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div class='divider-border' style='margin-top: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px'><\/div><div class='clear'><\/div>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>POP ART MURAL<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">This project tied nicely to the Twist &amp; Shout course&#8217;s 1960s theme, giving students an exciting and colorful introduction to the context\/history behind the American pop art movement. Using Andy Warhol\u00a0and\u00a0Roy Lichtenstein as our guides, we discussed how artists used various aesthetic\u00a0effects (i.e.\u00a0color blocking and\u00a0repeated visual motifs) to reflect complex ideas about society and mass consumerism. We then learned how to copy\/transfer images and worked together to create\u00a0a series of\u00a0collaborative class murals using\u00a0acrylic paint on canvas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.deborahznewman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/caw-popart2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  aligncenter wp-image-3324\" src=\"http:\/\/www.deborahznewman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/caw-popart2.jpg\" alt=\"caw-popart2\" width=\"790\" height=\"587\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.deborahznewman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/caw-popart2.jpg 870w, http:\/\/www.deborahznewman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/caw-popart2-300x223.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 790px) 100vw, 790px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div class='divider-border' style='margin-top: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px'><\/div><div class='clear'><\/div>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>URBAN DESIGN<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">In addition to leading a fine arts (elementary) workshop centered around 1960&#8217;s culture, I also taught an in-depth course on urban design to a highly inquisitive\u00a0group of 3rd\/4th graders. Together, we tackled important open-ended questions (i.e. how do you define\/build community?) and mapped out our ideas for a shared public space with\u00a0g\u00a0inspiration boards and architectural blueprints. From there, we went on to build our own three-dimensional city\u00a0using almost exclusively recycled materials.
